First, look up. Are you making use of all of the vertical space in the room, or have you concentrated solely on the space that is eye level and below. Lie on the floor and look at your ceiling and walls and try to visualize all of the available space and what you could do to take advantage of it, without spending a lot of money.

Next, look at the space and see how you might divide it into separate compartments. In the bird's eye view of this room, can you see the short section of curtain that divides the area into two spaces. When you're sharing space with a roommate or sibling, it's important that each of you feel you have your "own" space within the space. Using a curtain, or a bookcase to divide the room is an excellent way to provide privacy with minimal intrusion into the room.

Notice how nicely these see through bookcases divide this room into two sections, yet allow you to still see through from one side to the other, thus not enclosing either section totally, but still making the room more functional with the bookcases, yet having two distinct areas for different purposes.
