How to Create a Color Scheme
Planning a color scheme can be a lot of fun.
And since color plays an important role in how you respond to your space, pick colors that you
really like. Often these will be the same colors you enjoy wearing, but not always. So don't get all
hung up on the "in" colors. Make your dominant color something you really love and then pick colors
that look good with it.
Here are two graphics of the same room with
the exact same furnishings. The only difference is the color palette. See how different they look,
just based on the color choices. The values and intensity are exactly the same. The only difference
is the color hues. It's a subtle difference, but nevertheless an important one.
Rich yellow greens combined with white and accented with orange
a very hot combination right now. But look at this same room in a neutral palette with a hint of pink,
equally coming into it's own in 2004. Look for this pink everywhere, particularly in bedrooms,
bathrooms and powder rooms.
The more subdued the color palette is, the greater
the need to vary the shade or tint of a hue, its intensity and mood. Add some texture to the mix and
you'll have a winning combination.
Or how about a bold black
and white and red palette, with just a hint of soft green? It's very contemporary and rich. This is the perfect
choice for outgoing people who love to entertain and assert their personalities.
But look at what a serenely beautiful atmosphere is created when a subdued palette is chosen. Everything is
the same except for the color choices and the intensity of the individual hues. Color
will describe your personality. Don't be afraid to use it boldly. And don't be afraid to
choose something more conservative. Both are equally stunning when done right.
