Do I need a degree in interior design? No, you don't need a degree. You're only going to be rearranging the furniture and accessories that your clients have already purchased. You won't be doing anything that you need a license to do, much less a college degree, though some people want you to believe you do to eliminate competition.

Do I need to be certified? No, you most certainly don't need to be certified for anyone or any group. That's a choice. Certification can't hurt you, but you certainly don't need it to become successful. You'll find I offer an excellent certification program, but it's not necessary to be certified or a member of any professional organization, no matter how important they make it sound or how long it has been in existence. All of those organizations require a sizeable fee to join annually, AFTER you've already paid them thousands of dollars to get trained. Is this a franchise business? No, this is not a franchise. You will be a completely independent business owner and free to set up and structure your business any way you choose. In fact, I believe there may be an actual correlation between the success and failure rate of trainees based on whether or not they believe that hands-on training is essential to their becoming successful.

I just found this quote on a website of a competitor: "The redesign concept cannot be learned from a book, video or from photographs. You need hands-on experience to understand how everything fits together." Hogwash! That is an insult to your intelligence and mine and to all of the people I have trained so far who are out there building successful businesses.

I never went to one of their "hands-on seminars" and I've been tremendously successful! I was the first professional "re-designer" on the West Coast. I never went to a seminar or class and never had the advantage of a training program like I've put together for you. So why would someone put on their website that it can't be learned without "hands-on experience"? They have to say that to get you to buy into their expensive program. Since I came along, they have now had to dramatically increase their pressure to convince people that hands-on training and their own certification program are essential to a person's success or start lowering their prices.

Now, first of all, you will get hands-on training through my course. You will start out practicing on your own home and those of a few friends (for free, of course), so there won't be any pressure on you whatsoever. My position is this: if you feel you have to have "instructor present" hands-on training, you can always go to an expensive seminar later on - but you shouldn't need to go that route because redesign is very simple to understand. Our training is so thorough, I promise you that you will learn enough to start your business for a fraction of what the high priced seminars charge. And wouldn't you agree that the money could be better spent on marketing your business rather than sitting in a 5 day seminar on the other side of the continent? (You'd be lucky to find one close to where you live and would most likely have to wait a month or more for the class to get enough students to go forward, if it actually comes to pass!)


Do I want to be associated with other redesigners who are professional? We will train you in redesign etiquette and give you the standards of professionalism we expect from ourselves. The rest is up to you.

Do I want to associate with other professionals who believe in educating their clients and respecting their wishes, not promoting their own private style? No - absolutely not. If anyone tells you that, it's fluff and spin. The promoters of the expensive seminars want you to believe this business is really complicated and involved. Why? I think just about everyone would agree that while money can't buy happiness, it sure makes happiness more easily attained. I mean, wouldn't that help solve a lot of YOUR problems? I'm sure you'd also agree that it's better to have some money than to be poor. However, no one can promise you'll make money at any business venture. If they do, be suspicious. You have to bring your own personality, talents, goals, knowledge and work ethic to the equation. Until you jump in and do it, the "you factor" is something no one, who is honest, can predict. If you're willing to do what it takes, there is no reason why you will not be successful. But you have to follow through.

Follow Your Dreams for Once? ...

REALITY CHECK: Don't fall into the trap of blindly accepting everything you read about starting your own business just because it comes from the mouth of some "guru" (I'm not a guru by any stretch of the imagination).

You will hear people say things like "This WILL work for you", "Such and such NEVER works", "Do this ...", "Don't do that", etc. when they don't even know what you're all about. In reality nothing is ever that cut and dry. What works great for one person might not work at all for the next, and vice-versa. A recent website visitor called me to say she had researched of the expensive seminars up north. She had left her name and number and was not in when the trainer called her back. When she didn't repond right away, the trainer called again and left a rather irrate message. When she finally called the trainer back to ask for more information, the would-be trainer was so pushy and aggressive, claiming one could never be successful unless trained by her organization, warning bells started going off right and left.
